Why in news?

  • President Ram Nath Kovind will begin his seven-day visit to Philippines and Japan on 17th October, 2019.
  • The President’s first visit will be Philippines. He will hold delegation level restricted talks with his Filipino counterpart Rodrigo Roa Duterte. He leaves for Japan on October 21, 2019. President is visiting Japan to attend the Enthronement ceremony of the Japanese emperor Naruhito.

India-Philippines relations :

  • The trade between India and Philippines is around 1.6 billion USD (2016-17). Around 1,20,000 Indians are living in Philippines as of December 2018.

Highlights of the visit :

  • The two countries also committed to work closely together to defeat and eliminate terrorism in all its forms.
  • The two countries decided to explore their common future through cooperation in space.

Why is Philippines Important For India ?

  • The ASEAN–India Free Trade Area agreement signed by India in 2009 also includes the Philippines as signatory.
  • Despite the impact of the India-ASEAN FTA in Goods, the India-Philippines trade has, so far, been at around $1.981 billion in 2016-17. In the year 2016-17, India’s exports amounted to worth USD 1487 million and imports worth USD 494 million.
  • Philippines is very important for both India and U.S to counter China in the region.
