US Venezuela Crisis

US Venezuela Crisis

  • GS2 || International Relations || International Politics || USA in World Affairs

Why in news?

  • US President Donald Trump has said he recognises Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president.

Reasons of USA – Venezuela tensions :

  • It comes amid mass protests against President NicolásMaduro who has overseen years of economicfreefall.
  • Hyperinflation, power cuts and shortages of basic items have driven millions of people out of Venezuela.
  • Mr Maduro was sworn in for a second term earlier this month, after a vote marred by an opposition boycott and widespread claims of vote-rigging.
  • In response to Mr Trump’s recognition of the opposition leader, Mr Maduro broke diplomatic ties with the US and gave its diplomatic staff 72 hours to leave Venezuela.
  • He accused Washington of trying to govern Venezuela from afar and said the opposition was seeking to stage a coup.

Why USA is so aggressive in this case ?

  • There were reports that Russia is about to set up military base on Venezuelan island in Caribbean.
  • China and Russia are trying to assist Venezuela and use it against U.S.
  • Moscow sees Venezuela as one of its closest allies in the region and has sharply rebuked US comments about Mr Guaidó’s claim.

Can india and china gain from this?

  • Potential U.S. sanctions on Venezuela’s crude oil exports would cut off the nation from Gulf Coast refiners that are among its biggest customers, likely forcing it to send more crude to China, India or other Asian countries. India would get cheaper crude oil.
