Agriculture crisis
Farmer suicides
• When Mallappa, a farmer in Andhra, left his home in Aug 2018, he told his family he was going to "buy groceries". They never dreamed he had decided to take his own life and was actually buying all the things they would need for his funeral.
Technology for farmers• Maharashtra govt. has launched ‘Maha Agritech,’ a project under which area under cultivation from sowing to harvesting, climate, and diseases on crops will be monitored digitally using satellite and drone technology.

Corporate Farms
• UAE and Saudi Arabia had decided to use India as a base to address their food security concerns. The farm-to-port project will be similar to a SEZ but in the style of a corporatized farm, where crops would be grown keeping a specific UAE market in mind.
Make in India• BHEL, one of India’s largest power generation equipment manufacturers, is in talks with Libcoin consortium to build Indian government’s first lithium-ion gigafactory as part of Make in India programme.
Balanced Regional Development• Paper major Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) is setting up world’s largest paper plant in the backward Prakasam district and has committed to develop a port at Ramayapatnam.
Textile Industry • Maharashtra has stepped up efforts to woo investment in the textiles sector from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka where integrated textile chains are grappling with several problems, including power shortage and niggles from the pollution control boards. It is planning to make Solapur the uniform and textiles hub of India.
Tourism• A spiritual circuit linking 133 religious places spread over 14 districts in Kerala has been given the nod by Centre under the Swadesh Darshan scheme.
• Tourism will get a major boost with the inauguration of the regional airport at Orvakal, about 35 km from Kurnool. Soon, Orvakal and Kurnool town would get merged as part of government promoting it as an ‘Industrial Hub’.
Infrastructure financing• Bharatmala Bonds are issued by NHAI to fund various road infrastructure projects in the country. These bonds carry a coupon rate of 8.5 per cent. NHAI plans to raise ₹10,000 crore through Bharatmala Bonds in the current fiscal.
NPA Crisis
• RBI has raised a red flag over spike in NPAs under the government’s flagship scheme to support micro enterprises in the country — PM Mudra Yojana.
Labor sector• In ‘Future of Work’ report, ILO has asked countries to commit to:
1. a universal labor guarantee
2. universal social protection from birth to old age
3. governance system for the gig economy
4. human-in-command approach to AI
Social Security
• Sikkim has launched ‘One Family One Job’ scheme which entitles one government job for every family in the state.
Universal Basic Income• Sikkim will be the first state to roll out Universal Basic Income (UBI) and has started the process to introduce the unconditional direct cash transfer scheme.
