India to Become NATO Ally?

India to Become NATO Ally?

Relevance

  • GS 2 || International relations || India and rest of the world || USA

Why in news ?

  • US lawmakers led a bipartisan attempt to elevate India as a NATO ally, reintroducing key legislation in the House of Representatives.
  • The Bill will have to first pass the House and Senate, before the President gives the final go-ahead. However, if enacted, the legislation will ensure that the US State Department treats India as a non-member NATO ally for the purposes of the Arms Export Control Act.

What is major non-NATO ally ?

  • Major non-NATO ally (MNNA) is a designation given by the United States government to close allies that have strategic working relationships with the US Armed Forces but are not members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
  • While the status does not automatically include a mutual defense pact with the United States, it still confers a variety of military and financial advantages that otherwise are not obtainable by non-NATO countries.

India – U.S agreement :

  • India already enjoys a special status as a Major Defence Partner to the US, by virtue of the National Defence Authorisation of 2017.

How does this benefit us?

India will be able to take equipment and research material for development projects as loans, use American financing for the purchase or lease of certain defence equipment, and receive expedited export processing of space technology.
